Golf Chip Shots
By Jack Nichols
Chipping requires all the principles of a sound golf swing. In an effort to increase loft, too many beginners tend to scoop the ball. This results in decelerating the swing. Ugh! Those scoop shots usually do not produce positive results.
Great chip shot artists rotate the body. In an effort to be still, beginners tend to lock the body. We want smooth, dependable rotation. Turn through the ball and out to the target. When we see Mickelson or Woods or Garcia chip smoothly, we think what great hands they have and how easy they make it look. What makes their hands work so well is their rotation. Everything flows when the rotation is there. Good touch starts with good rotation and getting your body in position to swing through the shot.
Professional golfers always finish their chip shots. The finish might look exaggerated to the beginner. When the beginner is tired or careless, he tends to shorten his finish and shorten his swing. The swing draws the image of a chop shot.
To force yourself to swing, try this. In your setup, position yourself so that your midsection is more available to your target. Put the ball back in your stance and keep the club behind the rotating chest through the completed swing. Be sure to turn through to the target. The rest will follow. Soon, everyone will wonder how you developed such a touch for chipping!
